"We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions." - Casel (2022) The CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) framework is used in our SEL program which focuses on five competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making
Sometimes students, parents and staff need an intense support model in a highly individualized setting. We offer counseling support in a one-on-one session with a psychology intern trained in specialized social-emotional skill-building support. Strict confidentiality within the session between the student (or other person in need) and the intern is maintained. SEL Tier 3 is our internal support system designed to help students, parents, and teachers navigate school-based challenges related to emotional well-being, behavior, and connection. Rooted in the CASEL framework, this level of support provides personalized strategies to build self-awareness, strengthen relationships, and promote a positive learning environment. Our team works closely with families and educators to ensure every student receives the care and connection they need to thrive.
**While this provides a high level of individualized support, this is still separate from a clinical mental health setting service, and we do not provide that level of care in a school setting (See below):
SEL Tier 3 supports are provided by highly qualified doctoral interns in advanced stages of their training (final year and practicum of their psychology program). They receive ongoing training, supervision, and support from both CVCS Student Support staff, which includes a supervising psychologist, and their respective universities. Our program is now in its sixth year and has become a preferred practicum site for universities. This helps ensure that students are supported by well-prepared individuals within a structured, school-based framework.
