It’s important to know some of the signs that a young person may be struggling with serious emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm. These may include:
Talking about wanting to die or expressing thoughts of suicide
Searching online for ways to harm themselves or showing access to dangerous items
Saying they feel hopeless or like they have no reason to live
Expressing feelings of being trapped, overwhelmed, or in unbearable emotional pain
Saying they feel like a burden to others
Using more alcohol or drugs than usual
Seeming extremely anxious, agitated, or engaging in risky behavior
Sleeping much more or much less than usual
Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy
Showing sudden anger, irritability, or talking about “getting back” at someone
Having strong or unpredictable mood changes
